As a mentor, you serve as an adult role model to students. Because there is a career focus on this program. There will be a fair amount of discussion with your mentee in related topics. While we do ask for what job sector that you work in, as well as ask the student what job sector they are most interested in. Being in the different job field will not disqualify you from being a particular student's mentor. That is because the point is to have students to use these discussions to better define what jobs interest them, what workplace environments and cultures exist and gain a better understanding about how to keep and find a job.
Being a mentor also has benefits. Including sharpening your communication skills, as well as learning more about the future workforce and perhaps even recruiting some individuals into your industry. This is an opportunity to make an impact in our community to sustain jobs and encourage our homegrown students to use their talents locally.
To be a successful mentor in this program one must have the ability to empathize with well with students, as well has hold respect for their point of views and abilities to make their own choices. Having this trusting and empathetic relationship has been shown to lead to benefits to both socio-economic and cognitive benefits both of which we hope to achieve (Rhodes). As a mentor, you are not matched in order to change their attitude nor judge the mentees actions. This role requires one to think creatively and be open to not only sharing knowledge, but also receiving knowledge. Mentoring is a two way street in this program.
